The Before-a laminate covered cedar chest. I decided to redo it after seeing a post on Sweet Pickins site. On her site she added extra wood to dress up a basic chest. The one I had, had some nice detail so I just painted it. I lightly sanded it. Coated it with a layer of brown paint and then lightly brushed the off-white layer. I made sure to leave some of the brown exposed; especially on the edges. On this piece I actually painted some brown on after I finished because I didn't feel it was distressed enough. I found a font I liked and printed the numbers. I traced the outline on the chest and lightly brushed the brown on. Finished Product The final step was to drill two holes in the front of the lid. I then tied knots on the front and inside to secure the handle. |

Our pastor asked us recently if we could create a tree that would be used for the summer services. The theme is going to be around Psalms and Psalms 1 uses the imagery of a tree. She was hoping we could create something that could symbolize that tree. Then every week they plan to hang an image from that particular Psalm. At first I attempted to get out of the tree project by suggesting we use a tree I'd given my sister for her classroom. After a little Pinterest searching I found this tree from kararosenlund.com. We loved it! But how does it stay together? This is what we did to create it. We bought a 6 foot 1/2 inch All Thread rod and two 1/2 inch nuts. My dad then welded those to a base made of angle iron that he had laying around his shop. We then went searching for the perfect branches. I was looking for dead branches that were about an inch and a half in diameter that didn't have any bark on them. We brought back this trailer full. I then started cutting them in length between 4.5 feet and 4 inches. My husband started drilling holes in the middle of each branch. And then we'd place them at different angles on the rod. It sways a little so we plan to put four wires from the middle to each corner of the angle iron to secure it. I love how it turned out and may have to bring it home after the summer worship services are over. I'm sure I'll find a use for it among my Christmas decor.
